Everything You Need to Know About the AAH Increase to 1600 Euros for Beneficiaries

1600 euros. The figure strikes, imposes itself. Behind this announcement, a tidal wave of expectations and calculations: the revaluation of the Adult Disability Allowance (AAH) promises progress, but every detail counts. Currently capped at 1,016.05 euros per month, the AAH is set to change its face, driven by a precise timeline and criteria that have never been adjusted. At stake are processes that do not lighten, rules that raise questions, and a nagging question: who will actually see the benefit of this increase?

AAH at 1600 euros in 2026: how far will the reform go?

December 2023 puts everyone face to face with the facts: the government’s promise is now enshrined in law, the AAH ceiling will rise to 1600 euros, in stages, by 2026. Behind the display, reality remains more measured. The access criteria do not change. Recognition of disability, age, residence, and the entire administrative process remain as regulated as before. Nothing is simplified: annual declarations, checks, files to complete, and supporting documents to provide. The main advancement is this increase in the amount. Starting in April 2026, the maximum paid will reach 1,041.59 euros per month. But one should not expect a revolution in terms of procedures. The declaration of resources remains mandatory, and the process remains unchanged with the CAF or MSA. Decoupling is now mandatory for everyone: only personal income counts in the calculation, the spouse’s income is permanently removed from the equation.

Who will actually have access to this revaluation?

Without changes to the fundamental rules, two main profiles are concerned. First, a mandatory passage before the CDAPH, the Commission for the Rights and Autonomy of Persons with Disabilities. To benefit from the revalued AAH, one must meet the following criteria:

  • Individuals whose disability rate is recognized at 80% or more;
  • Those with a rate between 50% and 79%, if the commission recognizes a “substantial and lasting” restriction on access to employment.

Once the decision is made, a complete file must be sent to the MDPH. Since the reform, the calculation is based exclusively on personal resources. Exceeding 11,656.44 euros per year cuts access to the revalued amount. Any change in professional, family, or income situation must be reported without delay: otherwise, the allowance may be suspended or even reduced.

On the other hand, the exact amount received fluctuates according to complementary schemes (APL, allowance for independent living) and the social laws in force. Starting in April 2026, 1,041.59 euros will become the usual ceiling, but certain situations on the ground will lead to personal adjustments.

To clarify, here are the three rules to remember about thresholds and criteria:

  • In April 2026, the ceiling will be raised to 1,041.59 euros per month;
  • Individual income threshold: 11,656.44 euros per year not to be exceeded;
  • The income of other household members is definitively excluded from the calculation.

There are still special cases: a long hospitalization (more than 60 days) or incarceration results in a reduction of the allowance to 30% of its amount, unless a child remains dependent. For those who work or resume an activity, the payment is adjusted monthly based on income declarations.

How to create or renew your AAH file?

Putting all the chances on your side requires organization and anticipation. The first step is to gather a complete file to send to the MDPH: identity document, proof of residence, last tax notice, recent medical certificate… Nothing can be overlooked. The Cerfa form 15692*01 is available for download on Service-public.fr and must then be sent to the MDPH of the department. The processing of the file takes several weeks, so it is better to anticipate the renewal procedures.

After allocation, the administrative requirements continue. Each year, one must declare their resources to the CAF or MSA. Any change of address, household composition, or professional situation must be reported promptly, or the AAH may be suspended or even temporarily removed.

To simplify the distribution of responsibilities, each actor plays a well-defined role:

  • MDPH: receipt of files, verification, and transmission before the CDAPH;
  • CAF or MSA: monthly payment of the allowance, readjustment if necessary according to resources;
  • Service-public.fr: provides up-to-date official forms and a reliable information point.

The promise is great, but the real achievement will come from better administrative clarity. If the system does not modernize, beneficiaries will see the displayed ceiling, without their bank statements truly changing. The challenge remains to transform this figure on paper into an amount in the account. And that is the whole issue.
